Two Hands Sexy Beast McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Not really sure I would be keen to name a wine I made after a celluloid psychopath, but each to their own. For me, this is more Gandhi than Don Logan (Sir Ben Kingsley’s character in said ‘Sexy Beast’ movie – and if I may digress, as much as I loved Sir Ben in both, I still think Dustin Hoffman’s performance in ‘Tootsie’ should have walked in the Oscar, in the year of ‘Gandhi’. Robbery!).

Back to the wine which has a calmness and completeness to it – real balance. Even an appealing soft nature, and the one thing no one would ever say about Don Logan was that he was soft – unless, of course, he wanted you to and then I would have said whatever he wanted.

Inky dark colour. Chocolate and tobacco leaf. The more time in the glass, the more it opened up. Aniseed and chocolate; lots of chocolate. In comparison to the traditional cooler climate cabernets, this is much more plush, rich and ripe. Fine yet abundant tannins. Still youthful and there really is noticeable grip. Lovely now but it will take two to three more years to start peaking and then live for many years after that.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
