Winifred is one half of a pair of new superstar single vineyard Grenache to come out of the Elderton stable, with both wines named after current Elderton custodians Allister and Cameron Ashmead’s grandparents. Winifred (who the boys called ‘Nan’) had a favourite saying that “red wine is a party”. Grenache like this one, proudly named in her honour, is worth a party too. Drawn from the family vineyard at Mengler Hill at 550m, this is a fittingly high-toned Grenache. It’s a purple thing, with raspberry frogs, red licorice and a little spring blossom fragrance before a palate that is more medium weight rather than deep and hearty. There’s still a shade of withering, licoricey blackness from the low-yielding bush vine fruit but tempered by glossiness and lift. It’s a winner.
