Paracombe Grüner V5 2023

Share

An intriguing blend if ever there was one, and a very well-priced one, as well. The V5 refers to a combination of the five varieties, but it is definitely dominated by Grüner Veltliner with 65% of the total. This is a good thing as nowhere else in Australia does Grüner like the Adelaide Hills. Gewürztraminer and Pinot Blanc both offer 16%, Riesling a further 2%, with the final 1% from Pinot Gris. Grown on the family estate vineyards, 632 dozen made. At just 11.5% alcohol, it is a pretty good option for lunch at your favourite Asian BYO. Straw/lemon in colour, this is a curious but pleasing blend, with spicy notes, stone fruits, pineapple hints, a touch of apricot skins and a minerally backing. There is a fine flick of acidity running the length through to a lingering finish. Enjoy it over the next two to four years. Definitely worth a look.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
