Henschke Stone Jar Tempranillo 2025

Share

From the Estate’s vineyards in Eden Valley, managed under organic and biodynamic practices, the wine was matured for half a year in older oak hogsheads. The wine is a tribute to Bosco Nicolas Henschke, the second child of Johann and Angela Henschke. In an unimaginable tragedy, Bosco passed away at just four weeks of age. Angela hails from Spain and the Henschke family have strong links to that magic country, so it makes perfect sense that they would turn their attention to this most famous of all Spanish varieties. Dark garnet with a ruby edge, this is a soft and approachable style, dominated by red fruits, and supported by notes of warm earth, smoked meats, dried herbs, raspberries and cherries. Seamless in structure, this is finely crafted with bright acidity and a long and lingering finish, exhibiting a mix of silky and silty tannins. There might be better examples of Tempranillo from this country, but I’m not sure I have seen them. Ten years.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
