Main Ridge Estate Trueman Vineyard Chardonnay 2025

Share

The Trueman Vineyard wines will be new to most lovers of Main Ridge Estate. This was a nearby vineyard established in 1984 with the assistance of Nat White, founder of Main Ridge Estate, and although originally planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, it was wisely transferred to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the mid-90s. Since 2021, Main Ridge Estate has leased the site. The fruit here was whole bunch pressed and fermented with native yeasts before maturation in French oak barriques, all older, for eleven months. The wine underwent full malolactic fermentation. Just 75 dozen made. Pale lemon/yellow in hue, this is taut, poised and focused. An elegant style but certainly one that is not lacking in flavour or intensity. We have notes of lemon curd, stone fruits, florals and hints of nutmeggy oak. There is a fine line of acidity and the finish lingers beautifully. The entire project has a lovely minerally backing. Enjoy this over the next ten to twelve years and there is room for further improvement.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
