Varney Wines Triplo

Share

I love these experimental wines where winemakers genuinely push the boundaries. Alan Varney’s inaugural Triplo is 45% 2021 Adelaide Hills Nebbiolo and 30% 2022 Sangrantino that both spent at least a month on skins and 18 months in barrel topped with 25% Montepulciano which had shorter skin and barrel time.  From the get go, it is complex, understated and charming, but still took a couple of days to open up with tar, dark cherry, licorice, wood and crushed spice aromas that are quite perfumed. Strong tannins to follow with the tension of Nebbiolo and Sagrantino density. It is a young bull, raw and full of muscle with a long, strong sinewy finish. Extended time in barrel has closed this wine down for now and best results will be achieved with a long sleep in the cellar.
